9. Relaxation. Okay, now we come to the part of the plan that everyone likes. Well, not everyone. Believe it or not, Barges and Sailboats who lead with a T or an R actually have trouble when it comes to relaxation. I guess you could say they have a predisposition to not lightening up.

And that’s what relaxation is all about: lightening up. Pulling back. Doing something fun. Obviously that varies from person to person. I like to fish. I find it very relaxing. Other people like to play golf, but for me golf is anything but relaxing. Golf stresses me out!

The whole point of relaxation is to do something that de-stresses you. It’s really the other part of step 3 above, in which I talked about figuring out what creates negative stress in your life. Relaxation is about figuring out what relieves your stress.

Tugboats and Sailboats who lead with a heart letter (I or M) are naturally inclined to do something stress-free. Oftentimes they find that people are a way to de-stress their life. So, for example, they may throw a party, and for them that’s a very relaxing activity. Or they’ll go to the lake with friends. Or they’ll get out a jigsaw puzzle and put it together with their kids. They find enjoyment in the people and the relationships, and those interactions help them escape from the pressures and tensions of their world.

Barges could probably take a lesson from that. I said earlier that Barges often find people to be their greatest source of negative stress. And yet people can also relieve stress—if you don’t try to control them. Only people can laugh and tell jokes. Only people can give affirmation and a sense of belonging. Only people can be creative and entertaining. Only people can talk.

How do the three boats tend to work this step?

Barges believe that relaxation is something you do when your work is completed. But of course their work never seems to be completed. So they rarely relax. They’re liable to tell their family, “Just go on to the party without me.”

Tugboats love to relax. Almost any activity will do: watching movies, playing games, visiting friends, going to the lake. Of all the patterns, Tugboats find this step to be the easiest.

Sailboats can enjoy relaxation, as long as it’s with friends. However, sometimes they have a tendency to overcommit, which can hamper their attempts at relaxation.
